I teach those wanting to explore and develop as spontaneous improvisers. This can encompass free improvisation as well as playing on tunes. Saxophone, clarinet, and electric bass players I can teach from the very beginning; all other instruments you will have to have a working knowledge of your instrument. No experience with improvising or jazz is necessary: only a desire to stretch out!
Lessons incorporate topics like harmony, melody, ear training, theory, physical awareness, repertoire, and studying the recorded history of jazz and improvisation. Ultimately everything comes down to feeling and my doing what I can to get my students to more authentically express themselves through their instruments!
I'm available for lessons in New York City and online.
